This is being made possible as a Rs 48 crore high-level bridge across the Coleroon.

ARIYALUR: A record 68 years after Independence, residents of Ramanallur in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district, an islet in the Coleroon river, could soon zip past the river to reach Azhzagiamanavalam village on the mainland.

This is being made possible as a Rs 48 crore high-level bridge across the Coleroon to link Ramanallur with Azhagiyamanavalam village on the left bank of the river has been almost completed. Only a few minor works are pending, which would be completed in the new few days, PWD sources told DC here.

The sources explained that they have informed about the completion of this bridge to the State Government as well as to the office of the Chief Minister, to help fix a date for the inaugural of the new bridge.

The 750-metre long bridge with a width of 7.50 metres, has been constructed with the financial assistance of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (NABARD).

While NABARD officials who recently visited the bridge and expressed their satisfaction over the quality of its construction and other aspects of the new bridge, sources claimed that the bridge has been almost completed ahead of schedule.

In the absence of connectivity, residents of the islet had remained socially and economically backward for long years. The islet has two hamlets, Mela Ramanallur and Keezha Ramanallur, with a population of about 2,500.
