Chennai eyes hospital seeks innovation to go global

The money will be raised from private equity investors to support the initiative.

Chennai: City hospital Dr Agarwal Eye Hospitals’ innovation in eye treatment – Glued eye well and also the PDEK will reach the deserving in several countries when the hospital expands its global presence. This BSE listed hospital intends to foray the global market by establishing about 200 hospitals in India and abroad.

This leading eye care chains, will invest about Rs 600 crore to achieve its goals by 2020. The money will be raised from private equity investors to support the initiative.

“Currently we receive 10,000 patients per day at all 60 hospitals and perform similar number of surgeries every month. Our new initiative will provide advanced and innovative eye care for the people across the globe. The PDEK, for instance, which uses 25 micron of cornea of an infant or young donor, will help restore sight in those who are totally blind. We have introduced this innovative technology for the first time in the world,” says Dr. Amar Agarwal, chairman and managing director Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospitals.

At present this Chennai based hospital chain has around 60 eye hospitals, including 14 in Africa, 1 in Cambodia, another in Mauritius and the target is to take it to 200 hospitals by 2020 including 50 hospitals abroad.

In India the hospitals is now entering into Kerala by opening three hospitals and has also entered into Eastern market by opening one hospital at Kolkata. “Our strategy will be both organic and inorganic,” Dr Agarwal said.

Dr Agarwal’s is planning to invest around '600 crore till 2018. The company which has around '25 crore debt said that other mode of funding would be debt and internal accurals.
