Bengaluru: In separate incidents, two police constables, both from West Division, were suspended in the city on Tuesday for dereliction of duty. While a police constable attached to Chickpet police station (law & order) was suspended after he allegedly assaulted a shopkeeper in Majestic over a trivial row, last Friday, a traffic PSI attached to Vijaynagar traffic police was caught on camera accepting bribe during a sting operation.
In the first incident, Mahantesh Hiremath, a police constable attached to Chickpet police station was suspended after a formal complaint was lodged against him.
Police said the incident came to light after a worker of a shop approached the senior police officials and lodged a complaint against Mahantesh for manhandling and assaulting his owner. The police looked into the matter found that Mahantesh used to threaten the shopkeeper for money and when the latter refused he used to threaten to file false complaints against him, said the police.
When the matter was brought to the notice of senior police officers, DCP West Labhu Ram ordered an internal inquiry and Mahantesh was later suspended.
In another incident, a departmental inquiry was initiated against a traffic police sub inspector attached to Vijayanagar traffic police after he was caught on camera accepting bribe and also fixing a monthly bribe from a hotel owner.
Taking a serious note of the complaint, DCP Traffic West Girish S. suspended Narayan Gowda. According to the police, a private media house conducted a sting operation on Narayan Gowda. A decoy had approached Narayan seeking permission to open a small restaurant or opening a shop on the footpath. The accused PSI, after negotiations, allegedly struck a deal and accepted the bribe offered. He also fixed the monthly bribe. After capturing the guilty cop on camera, the person approached DCP Girish with the evidence. The senior police officer suspended Narayan Gowda and initiated a departmental inquiry against him.
