Another baby stolen from KIMS

Over last 2 years, several kidnapping cases reported from hospital.

Hubballi: Another child was abducted from the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here on Monday. The nine-day-old baby girl was stolen by a woman, dressed as a nurse, from the mother, who is from Ballari. The woman was caught on CCTV camera put up at the reception while she is escaping with the child.

The mother, Anitha, was admitted to the hospital on January 16 and she delivered the baby the next day. The accused woman, posing herself as a nurse, asked for the baby, saying that it needed immediate medical attention as it was suffering from fever. Anitha and her mother, who were at Ward No. 103, handed over the baby to the woman. They realised that the baby was missing as the woman did not return even after several hours.

“We are from a poor family and we were at KIMS as we cannot afford treatment at private hospitals. I have come all the way from Ballari. The woman, who took the baby, told us that the child was suffering from fever and had to be treated. We did not hesitate as she was dressed as a nurse,” Anitha said.

KIMS authorities said that they are trying to establish the identity of the woman with the help of over 70 CCTV cameras at the hospital. Over the last two years, several kidnapping cases have been reported from the government-run hospital.

The police had also detained a three-member gang that sold a baby to a childless housewife in Belagavi for Rs 75,000. A child that was kidnapped from KIMS last year and sold to a couple from Rajasthan had a mysterious reappearance at the hospital compound recently. But the police have not been able to trace the kidnappers.
