Chennai: Man carries peacock feathers for Singapore Thai Poosam fest, held
Customs officials alerted forest personnel who arrested Murugan and seized the feathers.
Chennai: A 45-year old man was arrested at Chennai airport on Friday for allegedly attempting to smuggle peacock feathers weighing 70 kg.
According to sources, S. Murugan of K.K. Nagar was scheduled to leave for Singapore by an Air India flight at 2.30 pm on a tourist visa. During the routine check, customs officials found he was carrying two plastic bags containing peacock feathers. On suspicion, officials opened the bags and found they contained peacock feathers.
Customs officials said export of peacock feathers had been banned. Murugan stated that the feathers would be used in Murugan temples in Singapore during ‘Thai Poosam.’
Customs officials alerted forest personnel who arrested Murugan and seized the feathers.
