Helmet for pillion: 6,000 booked on second day by Bengaluru traffic police

Bengaluru: The city traffic police along with the transport department officials booked riders of 6,361 bikes as pillion riders were not wearing helmet. The Bangalore Traffic police booked 5,861 cases, while the RTO inspectors booked around 500 cases.

“Ten squads from transport department were at work along with the traffic policemen in enforcing the new helmet rule for pillion riders on Thursday and we were also spreading awareness by interacting with the commuters,” Narendra Holkar, Joint Commissioner for Transport, told Deccan Chronicle.

“On Thursday, we saw about 75% bike users complying to the new rule and we still are continuing with awareness and education for the bike riders on helmet wearing,” said M.A. Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) adding that we will gradually increase booking of offenders more in number, instead of leaving children and senior citizens without helmets with a warning.

The traffic police also checked other documents including driving licence, registration certificate, insurance, pollution certificate, and also for any modifications done to the bike and penalized them appropriately. The police were also collecting pending fines, if any, against any vehicle when they entered the registration numbers in their Blackberry.
