Sikkim Reviews Disaster Response as Landslides Hit Mangan, Over 1,600 Tourists Evacuated
Sikkim Chief Secretary R Telang chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to assess the disaster situation in Mangan district following heavy rains, landslides, and road disruptions. Over 1,600 tourists stranded in Lachung and Chungthang were evacuated, with more still stuck in Lachen. A landslide killed three army personnel and left six missing at Chhaten. Declaring it a disaster under the Disaster Management Act, officials focused on restoring essential services and communication. BRO, NDRF, and other departments were directed to expedite rescue, repair, and relief efforts, with satellite phones and sorties planned. Residents were urged to stay alert as the administration continues round-the-clock monitoring.
