Vedanta Scales Up Lanjigarh Refinery to 5 MTPA

Vedanta’s Lanjigarh facility has emerged as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery

Bhubaneswar: Vedanta Aluminium, one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, has successfully scaled up operations at its Lanjigarh Refinery to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), marking a major milestone in the company’s growth trajectory and reinforcing India’s push towards self-reliance in the aluminium sector.

With the expansion, Vedanta’s Lanjigarh facility has emerged as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery. The scale-up raises India’s total alumina refining capacity to nearly 13 MTPA, positioning the country as the third-largest alumina producer globally. The Lanjigarh refinery alone now accounts for about 38 per cent of India’s total alumina output, making it the largest single-location alumina refinery in the country.

Industry experts said the milestone would help build a globally competitive aluminium ecosystem in India, at a time when domestic demand is accelerating across key sectors such as infrastructure, automotive and electric vehicles, renewable energy, construction, railways and aerospace.

Alongside the capacity expansion, the refinery has also set a new benchmark in operational performance. In November, it recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 kilo tonnes (KT), registering an 8 per cent increase over the previous month and a sharp 68 per cent year-on-year growth. The achievement was supported by strong logistics and cost efficiency, including handling over 700 rakes the highest in a single month achieving the lowest specific power consumption in the last 20 months, and bringing conversion costs down to an 18-month low through process optimisation and improved resource efficiency.

Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said aluminium is a strategic metal central to India’s industrial growth and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. “Scaling Lanjigarh to 5 MTPA is not just a capacity milestone, but a step towards building a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain for the country,” he said.

Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO of Vedanta’s Alumina Business, said the achievement reflected the dedication and engineering excellence of the teams, guided by precision, collaboration and a strong Zero Harm culture.
