Sebi's Nation Wide Investor Awareness Project Jagrook For Students, Rural India

For rural India, Sebi will work with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to take financial literacy, awareness of regulated products and fraud-prevention messages to the last mile

Mumbai: Securities and Exchange Board of India is working on a multi-pronged investor awareness programme through different mediums of mass communication and regional languages in order to take investor education and financial literacy directly to different sections of society.

"A larger and more diverse market also creates a different challenge - it can be harder for a new or potential investor to understand," said Sebi chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey during nation wide launch of investor awareness initiatives under project Jagrook. Pandey was speaking at his alma mater Punjab University, Chandigarh.

On the eve of World Investor Week Pandey urged those invested in the markets or may be contemplating it to consider inculcating five habits: Beware of investment frauds-Use regulated products, channels and entities, not anonymous tips or finfluencers or exaggerated claims on returns, invest only in products you understand; start early and stay invested so compounding has time to work, diversify, do not mistake fixed returns to be risk-free.

On this occasion, Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Panjab University to promote financial literacy across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

"Digital outreach and physical outreach will go together, taking investor education directly to different sections of society. We will use television, print, radio, cinema, outdoor media, digital platforms, social media, OTT, WhatsApp and physical engagement, in English, Hindi and 11 regional languages," Pandey said.

"MUST (Mentoring of University and College Students through Trainers)will take investor education into universities by training teachers, staff and senior students as Partner Trainers," he said.

" For rural India, we will work with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to take financial literacy, awareness of regulated products and fraud-prevention messages to the last mile. We will also partner with State Governments and local citizen-centric channels to widen investor literacy."

" The National Securities Market Awareness Curriculum, supported by the free SEBI Investor Awareness Test, will provide a common but adaptable framework for investor education." Sebi chief said.
