Chennai: The Customs department has reimposed Quality Control Order on polyester yarn products after an order of the Gujarat High Court. Meanwhile, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has allowed limited imports of key AC and refrigerator compressors without mandatory QCO compliance till March 2027.

“The Hon’ble High Court has stayed the rescission of the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued vide notification dated 12.11.2025 and directed that the said QCOs shall continue to remain in force until further orders. Accordingly, all concerned are hereby directed that the provisions relating to BIS/QCO compliance shall continue to be applicable on Polyester Yarn products, including FDY, POY and IDY, until further orders of Hon’ble High Court,” the customs department said in an order.

The government had revoked the QCO on polyester spun, grey and white yarns, polyester continuous filament yarn, polyester partially oriented yarn, and polyester industrial yarn in November last year on the requests from the downstream industries.

On the other hand, DPIIT has allowed specified compressors and heat-pump components used in refrigeration and air-conditioning industries to be imported without mandatory QCO compliance until March 31, 2027.

Each company can import only a fixed quantity based on its FY2024-25 import levels, while imports beyond those limits must meet full QCO requirements.

Under the scheme, refrigerator compressors below two-ton capacity can be imported without QCO compliance up to 40 per cent of FY2024-25 import volumes. Compressors below two tons used in air-conditioners and heat pumps are capped at 30 per cent. Larger scroll and rotary compressors used in refrigeration and cooling systems are allowed up to 90 per cent, while compressors for VRF air-conditioning systems can continue to be imported up to 100 per cent of previous import volumes without QCO compliance.
