NMDS to clarify data sources and collection methods

Economic Survey called for strengthening statistical system by fully capacitating the MoSPI

New Delhi: The government on Monday said that the National Metadata Structure (NMDS 2.0) is designed with the objective that data and information are uniformly represented, provide clarity on the data sources, collection methods and enhance discoverability of data sets. “It is to bring in improved understanding of various data sets in the public domain such as census, surveys, administrative and those from other sources,” ministry of statistics & programme implementation (MoSPI) said in a statement.

Recognising that a sound and dynamic statistical system is the cornerstone for an informed citizenry, data-driven policies, and decision-making, the July Economic Survey had called for strengthening the statistical system by fully capacitating the MoSPI so that it can produce and integrate all required statistics with the desired quality, regularity, and timeliness.

It had also noted that given India’s 2047 goals, it is important for development policy that the quality and timeliness of administrative and transactional data of the line ministries are brought to levels that fully facilitate timely course corrections. “The NMDS 2.0 has been shared with ministries/departments for implementation. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation regularly interacts with the statistical advisors of ministries/departments on various issues, including this,” the ministry said.
