Robust buying in domestic equities, fresh foreign fund inflows and easing crude prices also lent support to rupee, forex traders said.

Silver also dropped by Rs 1,580 to Rs 47,235 per kilogram from Rs 48,815 per kilogram on Wednesday.

After rallying 565 points during the day, the Sensex ended 396.22 points, or 1.03 per cent, higher at 38,989.74.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude contract for October traded higher by Rs 4, or 0.1 per cent, at Rs 4,005 per barrel.

Higher opening in domestic equities supported the local unit, traders said.

After hitting a high of 39,008.83, the 30-share index was trading 384.54 points, or 1 per cent, higher at 38,978.06.

Financials and auto stocks led the list of top losers in Wednesday's trading while IT and Power stocks were gainers.

The Sensex dropped 504 points, or 1.3 per cent to 38,593.52 on Wednesday while the Nifty-50 fell 148 points, or 1.28 per cent, to 11,440.20.

BSE and NSE have issed the direction in consultation with the regulator, the Securities Exchange Board of India.
