Rain pushes chilli prices up in Telangana
Hyderabad: The price of green chillies has been rising again in the last five days due to heavy rains in Karnataka, which are affecting transportation.
The price of chillies had touched Rs 120 per kg last month in retail markets and Rs 60 in Rythu Bazaars. It later came down to Rs 38 per kg in Rythu Bazaars and Rs 50 at retailers. Nearly 300 quintals of green chilli comes from AP, Telangana and Karnataka to the city’s Rythu Bazaars.
Sixty per cent of this is from Karnataka and 20 per cent each from Andhra Pradesh and TS. The model price of green chill in city Rythu Bazaars was about Rs 25 last month, but due to the shortfall in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh crops, the price had been increasing.
Later, with a good summer crop in Karnataka, the prices had again started to come down. The lowest recent price at Rythu Bazaars was Rs 38 per kg and officials were expecting it to fall by a further 50 per cent this week.
But due to heavy rains in Karnataka, the transportation system has been disturbed, leading to a fresh price rise. Besides this, the closure of the Krishna Bridge between Maktal of Mahbubnagar district and Raichur in Karnataka has led to disturbances in transportation.
Thus from July 14, the price has been increasing day-by-day. From July 14 to 16, the price in Rythu Bazaars was Rs 55 per kg, and Rs 100 per kg in retail markets. On Monday and Tuesday, it rose to Rs 65 per kg in Rythu Bazaars and Rs120 in open markets.
It was Rs 35 per 250 gm in supermarkets on Tuesday. Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazaar’s estate officer Mr K. Vijay Kumar said that as the arrivals of green chilly depended on other states, there had been price fluctuations.
