Sensex dips further in late morning deals, drops 44 points

The Sensex opened lower at 28,345.49 and hovered in a range of 28,416.41 and 28,259.38 before quoting at 28,309.20.

Mumbai: Market benchmark BSE Sensex fell over 44 points to quote at 28,309.20 in late morning trade due to profit-booking mainly in metal, capital goods and IT sectors in view of lower industrial production amidst foreign capital outflows.

On the economic front, India's industrial production (IIP) fell 2.4 per cent in July 2016 over the same month last year. Industrial production expanded 2.1 per cent in June 2016 over the year-ago month.

India's inflation data based on consumer price index (CPI) for August 2016 slowed to 5.05 per cent. CPI accelerated to 6.07 per cent in July 2016 from 5.77 per cent in the previous month.

Meanwhile, foreign funds sold shares worth Rs 593.61 crore on Monday, as per the provisional data released by the stock exchanges. The Sensex opened lower at 28,345.49 and hovered in a range of 28,416.41 and 28,259.38 before quoting at 28,309.20 at 1155 hrs, showing a loss of 44.34 points or 0.16 per cent.

The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved down by 8.10 points or 0.09 per cent to quote at 8,707.50 at 1155 hrs. Major losers were Coal India 2.39 per cent, Tata Steel 1.77 per cent, ONGC 1.59 per cent, TCS 1.40 per cent and Tata Motors 1.11 per cent.

However, NTPC rose 1.80 per cent, Asian Paints 1.35 per cent, Adani Ports 1.23 per cent and SBI 1.11 per cent. Stock exchanges remained closed yesterday on account of 'Bakri Id'.
