Industrial output down, inflation up

New Delhi: With subdued growth in mining and manufacturing sectors, India’s factory output growth slowed to 3.1 per cent in May from 4.3 per cent in April and from 3.8 per cent in May last year, while retail inflation kept on rising for sixth month in a row. Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) witnessed a 3.18 per cent rise in June due to costlier food products such as grains, pulses, meat and fish, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) data showed on Friday.

The data also said the Index of Industrial Production, or IIP, grew at 0.4 per cent in March this year.

Retail inflation for June was higher than the figure of at 3.05 per cent in May but significantly lower than the figure of 4.92 per cent in June 2018. Retail inflation has been showing a rising trend since January,
