Pune: The Indian electric luxury car market is steadily gaining ground with consumers adopting electric vehicles for their daily and weekend use.
Luxury electric car and SUV sales jumped 61 per cent to a new high of 5,404 EVs in FY2026 over the previous year as per the industry and Vahan retail sales data.
Mercedes Benz, India’s biggest luxury car maker, on Friday said it has received over 650 bookings for its upcoming electric GLC SUV even before the market launch on Nov.4. The bookings were opened on Oct.5.
Assembled locally at its manufacturing plant in Chakan, near Pune, the new GLC 400 4MATIC will be the India-made variant, with deliveries slated from mid-November.
Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC receives a record 650+ ‘Expression of Interest’(EOI) within 36 hours
“Following the success footprint of the CLA, the electric GLC has already gathered 650+ expressions of interest within 36 hours of opening for booking,” Santosh Iyer, said, emphasizing the strong demand for Mercedes-Benz BEVs.
He expects the electric vehicle penetration to significantly increase next year with more BEVs in the portfolio.
Iyer said Mercedes-Benz's growth story in India continues, clocking a dual record of best-ever quarter and highest ever Jan-Sept sales, driven by customer-led strategy.
“BEV sales played a key role in this growth story, growing by 16 per cent YTD Sept 26, despite limited vehicle availability. The overwhelming response to CLA BEV, with 1,000+ confirmed orders and deliveries extending to March 2027, underlines the CLA BEV instantly becoming India’s most sought-after new-age luxury BEV,” he noted.
In addition, the top-end BEV EQS Maybach SUV grew significantly with 68 per cent YTD growth highlighting the success of both its entry and top-end BEVs, Iyer pointed out.
According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the auto industry sold 36,108 electric cars led by Tata Motors in Sept.2026, nearly doubling year-on-year from 18,559 units in September 2025.
In the luxury EV segment, BMW posted 36 per cent YoY growth with 502 units sold in Sept 2026, while Tesla, with its ongoing expansion in India, managed to retail 291 units, and Mercedes-Benz sold 125 units last month.
