Telangana Dy Speaker Calls for Unified Action Against Smuggling, Counterfeiting
FICCI CASCADE seminar highlights need for stronger enforcement, policy support and multi-stakeholder collaboration

Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Speaker J Ram Chander Naik on Wednesday emphasised the need for a coordinated national approach to tackle the growing menace of counterfeiting and smuggling.
Addressing a FICCI CASCADE seminar on “Illicit Trade: A Unified Approach to Counter Smuggling and Counterfeiting,” he said these activities have evolved beyond economic offences into serious threats to consumer safety, legitimate businesses and national development. He called for stronger policy support, effective enforcement and close collaboration among governments, industry and citizens.
Rajiv Thampula, Additional Commissioner of Customs, highlighted that smuggling and counterfeiting not only cause revenue losses but also fuel organised crime and pose risks to consumer safety. He stressed the role of intelligence-led enforcement, robust border controls and coordinated action with stakeholders.
R Bhaaskaran, Deputy Inspector General of Police (CI Cell), said illicit trade poses a serious threat to the economy, public safety and national security. He underlined the need for stronger intelligence sharing, inter-agency coordination and capacity building to dismantle criminal networks.
Industry representatives also stressed collective action. T. Muralidharan, Past Chairman of FICCI Telangana State Council, said illicit trade undermines genuine enterprises and discourages innovation, calling for joint efforts from policymakers, enforcement agencies, industry and consumers.
P C Jha, Advisor, FICCI CASCADE, noted that illicit trade is becoming increasingly sophisticated and requires technology-driven solutions, stronger enforcement and greater public awareness.
The seminar also featured a panel discussion on policy measures to curb illicit trade, bringing together experts from enforcement agencies, industry and consumer organisations.
Participants emphasised the need for stronger institutional capacity, effective policy implementation, and the use of technology to combat counterfeiting and smuggling. The discussions highlighted that sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to protect the economy and ensure a secure marketplace.
