Pvt traders export 1.65 lakh tonne wheat in April-August: Govt

The country has enough stocks to meet the requirements for Public Distribution System and other welfare schemes.

New Delhi: Private traders have exported 1.65 lakh tonne wheat in the first five months of the current financial year, government today said.

"Only a quantity of 1,65,364 tonnes was exported on private account during 2016-17 till August 2016. There has been no export of wheat from the central pool stocks during the year 2015-16 and 2016-17," Minister of State for Food C R Chaudhary said in a reply to Rajya Sabha.

"The country has enough stocks to meet the requirements for Public Distribution System and other welfare schemes," he added.

Chaudhary said there was no proposal at present for import of wheat on government account for central pool stocks.

Wheat production rose to 93.5 million tonne for the 2015-16 crop year (July-June) as compared to 86.53 million tonne in the previous year, according to the Agriculture Ministry's fourth advance estimate.
