I-T to send SMS for transparency
New Delhi: To bring transparency, Income tax (IT) department will now send sms to government and private sector employees on deposit of their TDS.
There have been instances where employers have deducted TDS from employees salary but not deposited it with IT department leaving them in a soup.
Some 2.5 crore salaried tax payers will benefit from this facility. These SMS will be send initially on quarterly basis and later on monthly basis.
In case of a mismatch, employees can contact their deductor for necessary correction. Simultaneously, SMS alerts will also be sent to deductors who have either failed to deposit taxes deducted or to e-file their TDS returns by the due date.
The CBDT will soon extend this facility to another 4.4 crore non-salaried taxpayers. All taxpayers who wish to receive such SMS alerts are advised to update their mobile numbers in their e-filing account.
Union finance minister Arun Jaitley said salaried class cannot afford to pay tax twice or indulge in litigations and hence they should be kept updated about their TDS deductions.
“Hence tax payers will benefit if they receive information through use of technology. So they can match the office salary slip and the SMS and at the end of the fiscal he will be clear about any possible tax dues,” Mr Jaitley said.
He asked the CBDT to work towards making the grievance redressal system for TDS mismatch online so that there is no interface between the tax payer and the income tax department. Mr Jaitley said that more tax payer services have to be provided in order to make the people tax complaint.
