Trai mulls internet telephony
New Delhi: To encourage internet telephony in the country, Trai on Wednesday issued a consultation paper which looks at various issues involved and how to resolve them.
While telecom operators are allowed to offer voice calls over internet, they have been reluctant to do it, as they fear it will eat into their revenues from mobile calls which offer them high margin.
Companies which provide purely internet services in the country are not allowed to provide service where its subscribers can calls mobile or landline subscribers within India through internet.
However, their subscribers can call overseas through internet. In the consultation paper, Trai asked as to whether these players will be asked to provide a minimum set of quality of services for voice calls. The regulator has also discussed the issue of allocating a separate series of numbers numbers for the internet telephony.
