Hosur made BMW bikes rolled out

BMW Motorrad has already had its presence in India with a line of 15 models but none of them was made in the country and come via import

Chennai: The BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle arm of German-based motor giant BMW, has rolled out its made-in-India sub-500cc segment motorcycles in the country with two new 310cc variants. With the new 310cc models, the riders could lay their hands on one of the much coveted motorcycles at a cost of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh.

Officially launching the first of its made in India motorcycles - BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS at Delhi, Dimitris Raptis, Head of BMW Motorrad (Region Asia, Pacific, China, South Africa), said that the BMW Motorrad has envisaged increasing its sale to a total of 2,00,000 by 2020.

“In order to reach the goal we should concentrate on two main aspects - new products and new markets. We have set Asia particularly India as our top market for BMW Motorrad,” he added.

Raptis also said BMW Motorrad has been partnered with Venu Srinivasan's TVS Motors to manufacture BMW G 310 R (Rs 2.99 lakh) and BMW G 310 GS (Rs 3.49 lakh) at the latter's manufacturing unit in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. BMW G 310 R is suitable for city roads while BMW G 310 GS would give balance and manoeuvrability on rough terrains.

BMW Motorrad has already had its presence in India with a line of 15 models but none of them was made in the country and come via import. The lowest cost of the BMW motorcycle in India was Rs 12 lakh and the price goes up to Rs 85 lakh, before the launch of new 310cc variants.

Raptis and Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India, said that the three-year warranty with unlimited kilometres, with an option to extend the warranty to two more years, would ensure peace of mind and uninterrupted journey. “Monthly instalments will be available through BMW Financial Services India,” they said.

BMW Motorrad has already started exporting 310cc model and had already sold 20,000 units across Europe, North America, Russia, China, Japan and South Africa over the past one year, Raptis said.
