Saridon exempted from FDC ban

The Supreme Court also granted exemption to three more formulations from the list of 328 banned FDCs.

Chennai: Saridon, the pain relief tablet brand of Piramal Enterprises, has received exemption from the list of banned Fixed Dose Combinations. The Supreme Court also granted exemption to three more formulations from the list of 328 banned FDCs.

In September last year, the government had prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of 328 FDC drugs. FDCs are two or more drugs combined in a fixed ratio into a single dosage form. The government had found that these drugs were “irrational", had safety issues and lacked therapeutic justification. The expert panel, which had recommended the ban, also found that many FDCs were formulated without due diligence and the mismatch of dosage could result in toxicity.

However, Piramal had procured a stay on the ban on Saridon from the apex court in September itself. “We have been continuing the sale and supply of Saridon after receiving the stay order. But the exemption has removed the uncertainty over the brand,” said Nandini Piramal,
