Bengaluru: Tomato prices falls by half to Rs 45 as supply increases

Both wholesale and retail vegetable vendors said they expected the price to hover between Rs 35 and Rs 50 over the week.

Bengaluru: Housewives, who were aghast at having to buy tomatoes for Rs 100 a kg last week, were happy that price fell to a more reasonable Rs 45 a kg on Monday due to increased supply.

Both wholesale and retail vegetable vendors said they expected the price to hover between Rs 35 and Rs 50 over the week. The price has come down from the shocking high of Rs 100 a kg last week due to increased supply by farmers, especially from parts of Tamil Nadu, according to them.

“Tomatoes had become unusually heavy on the pocket on June 12 and 13, but have become less costly thanks mainly to increased supply to the city markets,” said Mr Janardhana Bangera, a vegetable wholesale merchant in Yeshwantpur.

“Once the tomato price started to skyrocket, all the growers started to supply more of it to the market to make the most of it. But the glut led to a sudden crash in the price,” he said. “If the growers controlled the supply of tomatoes there could be some stability in their price,” he pointed out.
