Nightlife: BBMP to revise SWM cess

BBMP officials and members of the standing committees for Finance and Taxation will meet soon to discuss the proposal.

BENGALURU: Even as the garbage crisis is haunting the BBMP, extension of night life till 1 am for hotels and restaurants will produce more garbage, fear city administrators. Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy said that the BBMP is mulling over increasing the Solid Waste Management (SWM) cess on eateries and other commercial establishments by bringing certain amendments to the trade license rules. Commercial establishments, invariably, generate large quantities of garbage and the BBMP needs to appoint more staff to manage solid waste. This will bleed the BBMP financially and there is no way but to hike the cess, he said.

BBMP officials and members of the standing committees for Finance and Taxation will meet soon to discuss the proposal. Only after the meeting will the BBMP be in a position to talk about the quantum of increase in cess, he said.Mr Reddy suggested hoteliers and eateries segregate the waste and keep two separate bags to allow the BBMP to clear the garbage in two shifts.
