Preserve CCTV records at bank branches

Banks ordered to maintain CCTv footage for possible future investigation.

New Delhi: As new notes is getting seized across country, RBI on Tuesday asked banks to preserve CCTV recordings of operations at bank branches and currency chests for the period from November 08 to December 30, 2016.

RBI said that preservation of CCTV was needed to facilitate effective action by the enforcement agencies in dealing with illegal accumulation of new notes.

Agencies are seizing new notes across the country everyday even as common people are struggling to withdraw money from banks and ATMs.

Many bankers are also under the lens for helping in money laundering. RBI deputy governor S.S. Mundra said that in an operation of this size, there are always elements that would have behaved otherwise than what is expected of them and “we are keeping a constant vigil of the same.”

“We have issued elaborate instructions to all the bank management to do central data checking and whenever they find any inconsistency, it should be pursued further,” he said.
