Subrata Roy gets reprieve till July 11

Mr Roy was granted a four-week parole on May 6 to perform last rites of his mother.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended till July 11 the parole of Sahara chief Subrata Roy on condition that he should deposit Rs 200 crore with Sebi by July 11, failing which he will be sent back to Tihar Jail. Mr Roy was granted a four-week parole on May 6 to perform last rites of his mother.

Accepting senior counsel Kapil Sibal’s submission to show some ‘kind heart’ towards Mr Roy, a three-judge Bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justices Anil R. Dave and A.K. Sikri also granted permission to Mr Roy to travel within the country. The court asked Sebi to continue to auction Sahara’s properties to recover the dues it owes to investors.

The CJI observed “We are inclined to give one chance to Subrata Roy and Ashok Roy Choudhary to make good their word by July 11 and show us their bona fides.”
