Railways to refund via bank accounts

For smaller refunds, people will get ticket deposit receipts.

New Delhi: Grappling with an acute shortage of small currency after the demonetisation notes, the railways has decided to stop cash refunds for cancellation of tickets.

While for smaller amounts they will issue ticket deposit receipts (TDR), for amounts touching Rs 10,000 and more, the money will be directly sent to the bank accounts of customers. Thus anybody wishing to cancel a ticket have to furnish their bank account details.

Railways was one of the emergency services exclu-ded for three days up to November 11, which inclu-ded others like hospitals, petrol pumps and airports.

Railway ticket counters across the country have seen a huge rush with people queuing up to buy tickets, sometimes for large amounts. “We are giving TDR to those who are cancelling tickets and if the refund amount is Rs 10,000 or more, the money would be returned to the bank account of the person,” railway sources said.

The demonetisation of higher value notes has also brought down the e-ticketing business by 10 per cent on November 9 as compared to the previous day as there is a surge of over 13 per cent at the counter sale.

According to IRCTC, the online ticketing arm of the railways, total 5,55,587 e-tickets were booked on October 8, while it fell to 5,07,996 on October 9.
