Subrata Roy gets parole for four weeks

He has been in jail since March 4, 2014 as he is unable to pay Rs 10,000 crore towards surety for his release.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the release on parole of Sahara Group chairman Subrata Roy for four weeks to perform the last rites of his mother, who died in the early hours of Friday. He has been in jail since March 4, 2014 as he is unable to pay Rs 10,000 crore towards surety for his release.

A bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justices Anil R. Dave and A.K. Sikri allowed the plea of Mr Roy seeking permission to attend to the cremation of his mother and rituals connected with it.

The Supreme Court bench after hearing senior counsel Kapil Sibal and Rajeev Dhavan directed Mr Roy’s release. The apex court bench also directed the Delhi Police to remain with him in plain clothes during the parole period by way of protective custody.
