New Delhi: The GST Council on Friday decided to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) from state governments to look into the proposal of imposition of cess on sugar and will have to make recommendations within 15 days.
Arun Jaitley said that the cost of sugar production is Rs 35 per kilogram and its market price is around Rs 26-28 due to which farmers are in distress.
The GoM will look in ways to deal with the issue and how such situation will have to be handled in future.
Once the decision is taken by the GST Council, the government would come out with an ordinance to impose cess on sugar, said finance minister Hasmukh Adhia.
The GoM will be headed by Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Other members are Rajesh Agrawal, Sudhir Mungatiwar, D. Jayakumar, and Dr. T.M. Thomas Isaac.
