With a low judge-population ratio in the country, the Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur has expressed concern. He breaks down while talking about the state of the Indian judicial system. He says that Justice is a fundamental right and government cannot afford to deny it to its people. India's judicial system is in a bit of a mess. Court cases can take forever to be resolved, and millions languish in jails awaiting trial. And among the many reasons that have led to this sorry state of affairs, one stands out - India simply doesn't have enough judges. There are over three crore cases that are pending in various courts across the country. Of these, one crore cases are in the civil court, while there are 2 crore criminal cases that still need closure. At the present rate of disposal, it would require at least 30 years, if not more, to clear all pending criminal cases in the country, while civil cases would still continue. A large amount (almost 63%) of people are still in Indian jails waiting for a trial.
