According to the data of India Ratings, the sales value of generic GLP-1 injectable drugs has gone up since their launch in March and has reached Rs 460 million by July. In volume terms, it shot to 192,000 units by July

Chennai: Generic versions of GLP-1 drugs have seen a surge in adoption since March this year and this along with rising chronic disease incidence, and a healthy pipeline of new product launches have helped pharma sector clock double-digit growth in the past few months.
After the patent expiry for semaglutide in March 2026, several generic GLP-1 options are available in India. These generics are 50% to 75% cheaper than branded counterparts like Ozempic and Wegovy.
According to the data of India Ratings, the sales value of generic GLP-1 injectable drugs has gone up since their launch in March and has reached Rs 460 million by July. In volume terms, it shot to 192,000 units by July.
Ind-Ra believes the July 2026 rebound reaffirms the growth potential of the GLP-1 market. In July GLP-1 generic segment grew 15 per cent month on month in value and 16 per cent in unit growth. While pricing pressure may emerge over time, the category continues to grow with significant headroom for further penetration.
Meanwhile, July 2026 12.1 per cent growth of the pharma sector reinforces a structurally stronger growth trajectory for the Indian pharmaceutical market (IPM), driven by rising chronic disease incidence, accelerating GLP-1 adoption, and a healthy pipeline of new product launches.
Since December 2025, the market has been growing at 10-odd per cent and in June it grew by 13.3 per cent and July 12.1 per cent.
Chronic therapies continue to gain market share, while leading companies with strong chronic portfolios are pulling ahead of the market. The cardiac segment grew 14.9% in July 2026, the anti-diabetic segment saw 5.8% value growth and 11.9% growth led by new product launches.
Ind-Ra expects these trends to sustain industry momentum and support 9%-10% yoy sales growth in FY27.
