New Delhi: The age-old Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains we have grown up travelling on are ready to get a complete makeover under Indian Railway’s ‘Operation Swarn’ project.

After the rollout of the swanky new Tejas Express, Rajdhani and Shatabdi are all set to get enhanced catering, on-board entertainment and premium services as a part of this facelift.

This initiative by the Indian Railways is in response to the frequent complaints made by passengers regarding unclean toilets, inadequate staff, dirty linens, terrible quality of food and punctuality. The authorities have also decided to introduce a trolley service to provide good catering, proper hygiene and polite uniformed staff, among other facilities.

The project also aims at strengthening the security system with adequate deployment of Railway Protection Force personnel. 'Operation Swarn' will also focus on reducing delays, said an official, according to an NDTV report.

In its first phase of revamping, the railways has selected the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express and Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express for upgradation. Work on these 30 trains - 15 Rajdhani and 15 Shatabdi is due to begin on September 26.

The estimated cost for the refurbishing of these 30 trains will be Rs 25 crore.
