Benami deals: Govt may make Aadhaar must for property registration

Department of Land Resources has asked state governments to notify rules mandating 'consent-based Aadhaar authentication'.

Mumbai: The government has made Aadhaar its weapon to crack down on benami land deals by planning to mandate the mention of the 12-digit unique identity code during the registration of real estate properties.

According to a report in Indian Express, the authentication of Aadhaar will be a pre-requisite for documents such as agreement of sale and power of attorney and even for electronic registration of properties that will soon be implemented.

The government will amend Sections 32 and 32A of the Registration Act, 1908 to enforce this Aadhaar-based authentication. The draft of the amendments will have to be approved by the Union Cabinet followed by the Parliament.

“Every person presenting a document at the property registration office for registration, shall, whether executing or claiming under the same, undergo Aadhaar authentication,” a source told Indian Express.

The Department of Land Resources has already asked state governments to notify rules mandating “consent-based Aadhaar authentication” while registering the property documents.
