Nirmala Sitharaman, IMF Dy MD Nigel Clarke Discuss India's Economic Outlook

New Delhi: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday met IMF deputy managing director Nigel Clarke and discussed bilateral engagement as well as the outlook for the Indian and global economies. Both sides emphasised the importance of continued India-IMF engagement in strengthening macroeconomic cooperation, supporting sound policies and contributing to greater regional and global economic resilience.
During the meeting, Sitharaman and Clarke discussed India-IMF relations and appreciated India's role in supporting the South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Center (SARTTAC). They also discussed India's evolving growth trajectory and the implications of ongoing shifts in the global economic environment, including India's trade agenda and developments in the global trading system.
The discussions also covered recently concluded bilateral trade agreements and their implications for India's economy. Clarke, however, acknowledged India's economic performance, resilience and growth track record amid the prevailing global scenario. He also appreciated the government's efforts towards fiscal consolidation and measures taken to support the economy in the aftermath of the West Asian crisis.
