Hindalco Commissions 100 KLD ZLD Plant at Hirakud
The facility, equipped with advanced Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology, ensures complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents

Bhubaneswar: Hindalco Industries Limited’s smelter and power unit at Hirakud in Odisha’s Sambalpur district has achieved a major sustainability milestone with the commissioning of a 100 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant.
The facility, equipped with advanced Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology, ensures complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents, significantly reducing freshwater consumption and eliminating liquid discharge.
The project was inaugurated in the presence of senior officials from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), including Member Secretary Uma Nanduri and Regional Officer Dr. S. N. Nanda, along with top Hindalco executives led by Unit Head Sumit Mukherjee.
The MVR-based system enables 90–95 per cent recovery of clean water by evaporating and condensing wastewater using recycled steam energy, ensuring full compliance with ZLD norms.
Built at an investment of around Rs 35 crore, the project reflects Hindalco’s strong focus on sustainability, resource efficiency, and the circular economy. It also aligns with the company’s long-term goal of achieving water positivity.
The initiative positions the Hirakud Smelter and Power unit among leading MVR-based ZLD facilities, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible practices in the aluminium sector.
