Bharat Biotech to manufacture Cholera vaccine

Hyderabad: Global research and development organization Hilleman Laboratories on Wednesday announced that it will further develop and manufacture its next-generation oral Cholera vaccine Hillchol in collaboration with city-based Bharat Biotech.

The vaccine was designed at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. It was subsequently developed by Hilleman Labs.  Now, Hilleman Labs will collaborate with Bharat Biotech as it looks to bag the WHO pre-qualification tag for the vaccine. The collaboration aims strengthen the ability of both organisations towards prevention of Cholera in low and middle-income countries.

Till date, Cholera has been responsible for seven pandemics and accounts for nearly 2.8 million cases and an estimated 95,000 deaths annually. In India, about 30 per cent of the population still remains at risk from Cholera.

Bharat Biotech will scale the manufacturing process to commercial stage.
