Great Indian e-commerce battle: 'Miles ahead' of Amazon in sale, says Flipkart

Flipkart said it had captured 70 per cent of India's online shopping market in this period.

Mumbai: Amidst the battle for leadership between e-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart, the latter has claimed that it was ‘miles ahead’ of its competitor in its five-day Big Billion Day sales that ended on Sunday night.

According to a report by Business Standard, Flipkart said it had captured 70 per cent of India’s online shopping market in this period.

This statement from Flipkart comes as Amazon on Sunday claimed it saw the “biggest sale till date” with its Great Indian Sales this year. “We have seen 2.5X growth in smartphone sales, 4X increase in large appliances and 7X in fashion sales. This is our biggest ever sale," said Amazon India vice president-category management Manish Tiwary.

However, both firms have stayed away from sharing their data on gross merchandise value (GMV).

According to data collated by RedSeer Consulting, Flipkart is likely to have lived up to its claim. “We had estimated that sales during this period would reach Rs 10,000 crore, but now it looks like they will reach Rs 8,500 crore. Our preliminary analysis shows that Flipkart’s GMV will be close to double that of Amazon during the five-day period,” said Anil Kumar, CEO, RedSeer.

Categories that drove up sales were fashion, smart appliances, and electronics. It should be noted that Flipkart was ahead of Amazon in 2016 race as well.
