This comes as a disappointment for the ones who were waiting for the BMW G 310R in India. BMW Motorrad has officially confirmed the delay in the launch of its smallest displacement motorcycle ever, the G 310R. The 310cc bike designed and developed by BMW Motorrad will not be launched in India this year. The automaker has joined hands with TVS Motors, which will manufacture the G 310R for Indian and export markets.
It is now believed the G 310 R will be launched in India in either January or February 2017, though no date has been confirmed as yet. BMW and TVS came together to jointly work on platforms utilising small displacement engines (500cc or less) in 2013. The G 310 R is the first motorcycle from this partnership (first of the BMW bikes from the venture too). In a related development, TVS previewed its first motorcycle from this partnership, the Akula 310, as a sportsbike concept at 2016 Auto Expo. The Akula 310, rumoured to retain the Akula name, is reportedly still on schedule for launch next year.
The G 310 R's launch delay in India is being attributed to supply constraints. BMW may be looking to export the G 310 R to European markets while making it available in India initially. Hence, the initial production lot may not fulfil both the Indian and export market requirements simultaneously. In essence, the move may be looked at as BMW Motorrad being patient by delaying the launch to ensure customers get quicker deliveries. If this is the case, at least many customers would be able to get their hands on the G 310 R without waiting for long.
An all-new, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 310cc single-cylinder engine powers the BMW G 310 R. It delivers peak power of 34PS at 9,500rpm, and peak torque of 28Nm at 7,500rpm. The BMW G 310 R has a trellis frame with a bolt-on rear subframe. The BMW uses upside-down (USD) forks up front while the rear is suspended by a preload-adjustable monoshock.
As per an announcement made in 2013 by BMW Motorrad India, the company would be creating its own dealer network to sell the G 310 R in India from. The G 310 R launch delay might allow BMW to have more dealers in place by the time the motorcycle goes on sale. It would be safe to say the G 310 R will be, initially at least, the most affordable BMW motorcycle available for purchase. However, BMW Motorrad India will continue to sell its more powerful bikes such as the S1000RR. These bikes come to India through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route.
