Narayana Health City successfully treated three patients suffering from chronic liver disease through related donor liver transplant.

Narayana Health City successfully treated three patients suffering from chronic liver disease through related donor liver transplant. The doctors sourced matching livers from the recipients’ family members and carried out the transplants at Narayana Health City. Patients included 39 year old Sathish Babu, 44 year old VenkataSwamy Reddy and 12 year old Sugita Sathiyaseelan.

Hailing from Dommasandra, Anekal 39 year old Sathish Babu was a known case of chronic liver disease owing to alcoholism. He was being treated at Narayana Health City where the doctors advised him to undergo a liver transplant. Luckily for Mr. Sathish Babu, his sister was found to be a matching donor.

Mr. VenkataSwamy Reddy, a 44 year old farmer was diagnosed with chronic liver cancer for which he was being treated at Narayana Health City. As his condition was not improving, he had to undergo a liver transplant. Fortunately for Mr. Reddy, his brother was a perfect match.

12 year old Sugitha Sathiyaseelan, a student from SriLanka, was diagnosed with chronic liver disease and the search for advanced treatment led her family to Narayana Health City where she was being treated. After a prolonged medical management she was advised to undergo liver transplant for which fortunately, her father was found to be her matched donor.

Speaking about CLD and the successful transplants, Dr. Sanjay Goja – Director and Clinical Lead, Senior Consultant and Head of Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Narayana Health City said, “Chronic liver disease (CLD) can lead to faster complications and higher mortality. The classic signs for CLD are severe jaundice, itching, excessive bleeding, stunted or retarded growth, bloated bellies, irritability and vomiting blood. About 8-20% of people with liver complications suffer from alcohol induced liver diseases and rest 70-80 % with other liver diseases. Liver diseases are not only common among high alcohol consumers but many non-alcohol consumers also suffer from liver complications due to high Body Mass Index (BMI).”

Chronic liver disease (CLD) consists of a wide range of liver pathologies which include inflammation (chronic hepatitis), liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. It is estimated that in India around 20000 people need liver transplant with hardly 800-1000 cases getting treatment. This may be attributed to the high cost of liver transplant surgery and lack of awareness amongst people apart from other social reasons due to which not many families opt for liver transplant.

The relatives who are allowed to donate include mother, father, brothers, sisters, son, daughter, and spouse. Recently in the new gazette, grandparents have been included in the list of first relatives. In majority cases donors are usually the parents where two-thirds constitute the mothers and the remaining one-third being the fathers.
