Flipkart to foray into groceries

Flipkart is also believed to have sent a revised offer of $900-950 million to buy smaller rival, Snapdeal, say sources

Hyderabad: Homegrown e-commerce firm Flipkart plans to foray into the groceries segment soon, according to a top official here on Tuesday.

Without defining a fixed timeline for the rollout, Flipkart’s head of marketplace Anil Goteti said, “We will be opening up groceries very very innovatively when we launch... The pilot is going on in Bengaluru. We will be launching it (groceries) in few months time.”

Mr Goteti added, “We will be doing more pilots (on grocery) across different cities. We will be coming out with very innovative and unique propositions that India does not have today.”

When asked about how the recently introduced Goods and Services Tax has impacted sales, he said that most of the he company’s vendors had migrated to GST. Thus, the sales figures had no impact.

Flipkart, which has recently set up a new 2.2 lakh sqft automated fulfillment centre in Gundapochampally in the outskirts of the city, however declined to comment on any new fulfillment centres soon.

The company plans to celebrate its 10th year anniversary with the ‘Big 10 campaign’ — a year-long celebration — to commemorate all aspects of the company's business and growth since it was launched in 2007.
