Karnataka: Wipro bags project for e-governance

IT major, Wipro, has been given a Rs 615.85 crore contract for expanding the project and maintaining it for the next five years.

Bengaluru: Taking the state's e-governance initiative further, the Cabinet on Wednesday approved the expansion of the Karnataka State Wide Area Network to connect all government offices upto the panchayat level.

IT major, Wipro, has been given a Rs 615.85 crore contract for expanding the project and maintaining it for the next five years and BSNL has been given Rs 180.6 crore for providing the required bandwidth.

Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, T.B. Jayachandra said currently around 4600 government offices were covered by KSWAN , which is connected through LAN, WAN. But now 10000 offices right upto the panchayat level would be covered by the network, he explained.

It was also decided to accept the National Civil Aviation Policy of the Union government and extend the required land and speedily execute projects under it through mutual understanding, the minister added.

Announcing that the monsoon session would begin in the first week of June, Mr Jayachandra said that the government, which had taken vote on account for releasing funds for three months during the budget session, would seek approval for utilising the rest of the money during this session.
