Samsung recalls Galaxy Note 7 after battery woes

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Note 7 last month in India at a price tag of Rs 59,900.

New Delhi: Samsung on Friday said that it has delayed sales of one of its flagship handsets Galaxy Note 7 in India due to battery issues.

The announcement comes when Samsung is globally recalling Galaxy Note 7 handsets due to a few complaints of the smartphone exploding while on charge.

Samsung would recall 2.5 million units shipped globally to countries including the US and South Korea, and offer new devices to existing users. It is the first large-scale recall of one of Samsung’s top of the range phones. Galaxy Note 7 was the latest of Samsung's series of phablets - smartphones with large screens.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Note 7 last month in India at a price tag of Rs 59,900.

The device was to be made available in the Indian market from Friday. “To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have delayed sales of the Galaxy Note 7 in India," said Samsung India spokesperson. He said that company acknowledges the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers.

Samsung said it is committed to producing the highest quality products and takes every incident report from customers seriously. "In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note 7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue," the company said.
