Data-Giri: Reliance Jio to disrupt telecom market
MUMBAI: RJio, the telecommunication arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, on Thursday unleashed ‘Data-Giri’ in the Indian telecom industry by announcing free voice calls for its customers and record low data charges that is expected to change the entire landscape of the telecom sector.
“Jio will put an end to voice call charges in India. No Jio customer will ever have to pay for voice calls again. Across India. To any network. Always. And in the spirit of one India – no roaming charges also,” said Mukesh Ambani, chairman, RIL said during the annual general meeting. RJio, which will offer full bouquet of services from September 5 has ten main tariff plans starting from Rs 19 for the occasional data user to a monthly Rs 149 plan for the light data user and Rs 4,999 monthly plan for heavy data users. The average data prices would be around Rs 50 per GB, which would be amongst the lowest in the world. Currently, the data packs available in the markets have an effective rate of about Rs 250 per GB. A special discount to students has been offered with 25 per cent more data on the main tariff plans.
However, as part of the Jio Welcome Offer, users will have access to unlimited LTE data and national voice, video and messaging services along with the full bouquet of Jio applications and content, free of cost up to December 31, 2016. Elaborating the principles, Mr Ambani said: “Customers should pay for only one service, either voice or data.”
