Smartphones hit camera sales hard

Smartphone sales almost more than doubled from 44 million units in 2013 to 100 million units in 2016.

Mumbai: Availability of affordable smartphones with better cameras has taken a toll on digital camera sales in the country, said a study conducted by Assocham.

“Affordable smartphones includes handsets in the price of Rs 4,000- Rs 10,000. This segment accounts for 78 per cent of all smartphone sales equipped with almost similar features which one may get in these sub- Rs 10,000 cameras, and thus the craze of digital cameras have almost vanished,” said Mr D.S. Rawat, secretary-general of Assocham, while releasing the study.

The sales of digital cameras, despite heavy discounts, have drastically dropped by 35 per cent in the last one year whereas the demand of smartphones has increased by over 120 per cent, the study reveals.

Smartphone sales almost more than doubled from 44 million units in 2013 to 100 million units in 2016. The volume of smartphone sales is expected to touch 165 million units by 2017.

According to Deloitte report, the spike in increased sales of smartphones is attributed to the availability of 4G services in the country and digital platforms like digital audio and video on demand service. Viewers across markets are showing an increased preference to consume video content on smartphones with larger screen sizes, the report said.
