Car Dispatches To Dealers In August Rise 36.5% YoY To 4.39 Lakh Units: Siam

Pune: Passenger vehicle dispatches from factory gates of automakers to dealers jumped 36.5 per cent from a year ago to 4.39 lakh units in August, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers or Siam said on Tuesday.

Passenger vehicle dispatches were at 3.21 lakh units in August 2025, it said.

Total two-wheeler sales increased 10.5 per cent to 20.35 lakh units last month, as against 18.42 lakh units in August last year.

Growth in the segment was led primarily by scooters, which climbed 23.8 per cent to 8.56 lakh units from 6.91 lakh units a year earlier. Motorcycle dispatches rose at a more moderate pace of 2.4 per cent to 11.33 lakh units compared to 11.07 lakh units, while moped volumes grew 4.7 per cent to 45,936 units.

Three-wheeler dispatches were up 22.8 per cent in the previous month at 93,764 units as against 76,324 units in the year-ago period, Siam said. Within this category, passenger carrier volumes rose 22.4 per cent to 78,680 units, while goods carriers recorded a 34.9 per cent increase to 13,320 units.

On the other hand, electric three-wheelers reported contractions: e-rickshaw dispatches dropped 6 per cent to 1,264 units, while e-carts declined 38.3 per cent to 500 units.

Rajesh Menon, director general at Siam, said passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded the highest ever sales of August in 2026. Goods and Service Tax (GST) reforms introduced by the government in 2025 has helped boost the automotive industry on a year-on-year basis, he said.

“India’s automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase. The growth in August 2026 has been supported by a lower base from the previous year,” Menon noted.

“The broader demand environment remains fundamentally healthy. Strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains are creating a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories,” he added.

“Festive demand is also expected to provide an additional boost, resulting in healthy Q2 numbers,” Menon pointed out.

The total production of PVs, 3Ws, 2Ws and Quadricycle in August 2026 was 31.58 lakh units, as per Siam data.

Siam noted that the passenger vehicle data includes Tata Motors' domestic sales only at the aggregate level without detailed sub-segment splits, while luxury carmakers BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo do not report monthly numbers to Siam.
