New Mercedes AMG SL 55 rolled out at Rs 2.35 crore

PUNE: Mercedes-Benz, India’s biggest German luxury carmaker, on Thursday introduced its iconic AMG SL 55 4Matic+ roadster priced at Rs 2.35 crore at pan India showroom.

Significantly, the imported new convertible has already received 30 confirmed bookings in India before the official launch.

The SL has been one of the longest-standing names in the Mercedes-Benz lineup and is now in its 7th Generation.

The two-door roadster features a 2+2 seating layout and a fabric roof that can be retracted in 15 seconds.

In India, the Mercedes AMG SL 55 will rival the likes of the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet priced at Rs 2.18 crore and Lexus LC 500h priced at Rs 2.39 crore.

The AMG SL 55 Roadster is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 mill in conjunction with a 9-speed automatic transmission. This engine generates 475PS and 700Nm of torque. With the help of a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, the SL 55 can achieve zero to 100kmph in just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295kmph.

The SL 55 comes fitted with AMG Ride Control with steel suspension and aluminium shock absorbers, and lightweight coil springs.

Mercedes claims that, for the first time, a series production AMG model is equipped with a multi-link front axle setup. It also gets active rear-axle steering as standard.

“SL is an emotion for us with a lot of history since 1952. The car is symbolic in many ways including in movies it is used as an expression of freedom and lifestyle that continues even today. The star is reborn now with the new generation. We have customers who want the car as early as possible. This depicts that the car is an icon and cult and people want to own a piece of history,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO at Mercedes-Benz India.

“As we move forward, the next generation will be all-electric vehicles. This now becomes one of the switching points from combustible engines to EV,” he pointed out.
