Automakers generally reveal the information regarding their upcoming cars bit-by-bit and the case is the same with Tata Motors. The Indian automaker revealed the sketches of the Tiago-based sedan in February 2017 and also confirmed that the new sedan will be named Tata Tigor and not ‘Kite 5’. Tata will launch the Tigor on March 29, 2017 and on inquiring several dealers we found out that the bookings for the new sedan have already started for a refundable sum of Rs 11,000. However, now Tata Motors has revealed all the specifications of the Tigor. Let's take a look.
Dimensions
In terms of overall length, the Tigor measures 3,992mm, which is 246mm longer than the hatchback it is based on. Similarly, it is 30mm wider and 2mm taller than the Tiago. Tata Motors has also stretched the wheelbase for the Tigor - from 2,400mm to 2,450mm. This is primarily to stabilize a longer body on the same chassis.
Ground clearance and the fuel tank capacity remains the same at 170mm and 35 litres respectively. Boot space in the Tigor (419 litres) has increased by 177 litres over the Tiago. Even after the extended body, Tata Motors has managed to decrease the kerb weight of the petrol-powered car by 18kg. However, the diesel-powered Tigor is 50kg heavier than the diesel Tiago.
While the wheel size for the diesel-powered Tigor remains the same as the Tiago (175/65 R14), the petrol-powered Tigor gets 175/60 section tubeless tyres, wrapped around 15-inch alloy wheels.
Engine & Transmission Options
Powering the Tigor will be the same set of engines that are offered in the Tiago hatchback. While the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine produces 85PS of power and 114Nm of torque, the 1.05-litre 3-pot diesel mill generates 70PS of power and 140Nm of torque. Transmission duties for the engines will be handled by a five-speed manual transmission.
Tata Motors hasn’t revealed any fuel-efficiency figures as of now but both the engines, like in the Tiago, will feature dual drive modes (City and Eco). Tata Motors says the default City mode is tuned to deliver the best of both worlds - a peppy driving experience and good fuel efficiency. On the other hand, the Eco mode optimises engine performance to deliver the best possible fuel efficiency.
Looks & Features
Tata Tigor is the third car to carry Tata Motors’ Impact design language (after Tiago and Hexa). To make it distinguishable from Tiago, the Tigor gets dual-tone front bumper, company’s signature grille design with chrome garnishing which extends all the way into crystal-like smoked projector headlamps. At the rear, the ‘Styleback’ features LED taillights and LED stop lamp strip above the rear windshield.
The Tiago is by far the most feature-rich in its segment and with the Tigor, Tata Motors had to raise the bar higher. The feature list includes the same 8-speaker Harman-engineered music system which debuted with the Tiago. In the Tigor, however, it comes paired to a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment display. This screen has video playback compatibility, voice command recognition, SMS readout functionality and acts as a display for the reverse camera. The Tigor also gets automatic climate control, an additional 12V charging point for rear passengers and rear armrest with cupholders.
The Tigor certainly looks like a head-turner and, on paper at least, equates to be nicely proportioned as well. We are looking forward to its official launch at the end of this month as for Tata Motors there’s just one unknown aspect left to unravel - the price!
