Mahindra has been testing the 2020 second-gen XUV500 for quite a few months now but the design details have been scarce. Till now. The latest set of spy images have brought with them a couple of interesting insights as to what we can expect from the new XUV500 that could launch in 2020.
Previous images have revealed that the SUV could get flush-fitting door handles like we see on luxury cars. While the seven-slat grille and silhouette are expected to be more or less similar, the “cheetah design” elements are likely to be done away with. While we are yet to get a clear look at its interiors, the new spy shots hint at what could be connected screens for the instrument cluster and the centrally placed touchscreen infotainment unit. This setup might bear resemblance to the Kia Seltos and newer Mercedes-Benz models.
Given that the new-gen XUV500 could be based on the 2019 Ssangyong Korando, it’s bound to share some features as well. We’re happy to report that the Korando has a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and upto 9-inch infotainment unit with TomTom navigation system and ambient mood lighting.
The two aren’t connected but the dashboard layouts of both the cars are expected to differ. Other features that could be on offer include a powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control with ventilation function for the front seats and up to 7 airbags.
Powering the upcoming Mahindra XUV500 could be BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. Currently, the XUV500 only has a 2.2-litre diesel that delivers 155PS of power but the new one might make more than that. It should get a 6-speed automatic and AWD variants as well.
There’s no official word on the launch of the next-gen XUV500 but we could see it reach showroom floors in the second half of 2020 itself. It’s expected to retain prices in the current Rs 12.22 lakh to Rs 18.55 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) range. When launched, it will rival the MG Hector (5- and 7-seater), Tata Harrier (5- and 7-seater) along with the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta.
