The compact SUV segment in the county is growing at an exponential rate and every carmaker wants to have a piece of the growing pie. While a lot of carmakers are selling hatchback on stilts, marketed as SUVs, there are only a few that can be actually called true SUVs. One such offering is the Nissan Terrano. While it has the looks of an SUV, it is also equipped with suitable features to back its claim. So, let's take a deeper look at the SUV and find out what the Nissan Terrano has to offer.
Design
All the design elements on the Nissan Terrano come together to give the SUV a sleek and muscular stance. Its stylish boxy silhouette is complemented well by the smoothly sculpted curves, underlined by bold chrome accents. The strong and aggressive look of the front fascia is accentuated by Nissan’s signature chrome grille along with the 4-pod headlamp design which offers excellent functionality. From the side, it looks rather clean, while the muscular wheel arches add a hint of toughness. What makes the Terrano a proper high-rider, unlike its rivals, is the ground clearance of 205mm.
Interior
Inside the cabin, the Nissan Terrano treats you to rich interiors and loads of features which not only enhance comfort, but make the bold SUV even more practical. For instance, the dual-tone black-brown dashboard makes the cabin look upmarket. The steering wheel is also comfortable to hold and feels premium.
Nissan has taken care of ergonomics inside the cabin too. While the steering houses controls for audio and other features allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead, the driver seat armrest makes for a relaxing drive out on the highway. The convenience quotient is bumped up by the illuminated door switches for hassle-free operation in the dark and one-touch lane-change indicators.
Features
Not just premium interiors, the cabin is packed with a host of high tech features too. For starters, you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and Bluetooth. You also get features like cruise control for effortless highway driving and rear parking sensors, which make parallel parking a breeze.
The Terrano is also equipped with a tilt-adjustable steering, anti-pinch driver side window, adjustable front and rear headrests and power charging socket for rear passengers, for added convenience.
NissanConnect
Nissan has equipped the Terrano with NissanConnect service, which is a part of the brand’s intelligent mobility solutions. NissanConnect allows live tracking, service bookings and history, locating your car, trip analysis, towing alert, speeding alert and more, all through the convenience of a smartphone app. Nissan is the only automaker that offers factory-fitted telematics control unit (TCU) with an industry-first 3 years of free subscription.
Engine
Nissan offers the Terrano with three engine options. While the petrol Terrano is powered by a 1.6-litre engine that makes 104PS/148Nm, the diesel options include the tried and tested 1.5-litre motor in two states of tune - 85PS/200Nm and 110PS/245Nm.
These engines are not only powerful, but frugal too. The petrol Terrano, for instance, has a fuel economy of 13.04kmpl. The diesel too is quite efficient - 19.87kmpl for the 85PS version. Even the 110PS 1.5-litre diesel engine returns a mileage of 19.64kmpl and 19.61kmpl in the MT and Auto Drive variants respectively. Moreover, you can select the ECO mode for city driving, which reduces fuel consumption even further.
The Smart AMT Variant
As mentioned above, the 110PS Terrano diesel is available with an option of Auto Drive as well. It is equipped with a 6-speed AMT, which makes driving the Terrano bumper-to-bumper city traffic a cakewalk.
Safety
As far as safety is concerned, the Terrano has got you covered on this front as well. It is equipped with dual front airbags and ABS with EBD and BA. The electronic stability program comes as a boon as it helps the driver keep the vehicle in control during panic braking. It also saves the car from skidding off the road while committing to a turn.
Hill Launch Assist
If you enjoy travelling on the road less travelled, the Terrano will happily accompany you. The hill launch assist tech, as the name suggests, helps the SUV in ascending steep inclines. It does so by preventing the car from rolling backwards by applying brakes for a few seconds, allowing the driver enough time to get the SUV going again.
Verdict
All said and done, the Terrano comes across as a very capable SUV. It not only offers good performance but is loaded with safety and connected car tech too. The Nissan SUV beats its competition in the design department as well. It has a very distinctive, bold look which is very well complemented by its plush and feature-rich dual-tone cabin. All these factors come together flawlessly to make the Terrano a smart as well as a bold SUV.
