2020 Hyundai i20 Active spied testing; looks beefier than before

It should get the 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Kia Seltos when launched in India next year.
  • Next-gen Hyundai i20 Active could grow in size and cabin space.

  • Should feature the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Hyundai Venue.

  • Could get additional features over the current package along with BlueLink connected tech.

  • Expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo and launch after the Elite i20 later in the year.

After global sightings of the next-gen i20, we have now received spy shots of the hatchback’s crossover sibling, the i20 Active in India. The next-gen i20 Active is expected to grow in size and feature exterior design upgrades as well as major mechanical changes like the new hatchback. The test mule in question looks almost production-ready and could make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo, alongside the i20.

The spy pictures reveal rugged elements that are typical of the i20 Active crossover such as flared wheel arches, faux skid plate on the rear bumper and roof rails. The entire car is heavily camouflaged but the rear tail lights seem like the LED units that you expect them to be.

On the inside, the new-gen model is likely to bear similarities to the next-gen i20 as before. Apart from the convenience features such as climate control, wireless charging, touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the i20 Active could get the BlueLink connected technology that debuted with the Venue.

Major changes are expected under the hood as the 2020 Hyundai i20 Active could share its powertrains with the upcoming i20 hatchback as before. So, engine options include the 1.5-litre diesel from the Kia Seltos along with the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Hyundai Venue. The BS6-compliant 1.2-litre unit from the Grand i10 Nios is also expected onboard.

Prices of the next-gen Hyundai i20 Active are expected to rise from the current range of Rs 7.74 lakh to Rs 9.93 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is an alternative to the Toyota Etios Cross and Honda WR-V. Hyundai could launch the i20 Active after the 2020 Auto Expo (held in February) in mid-2020.
